Sophia High School – Upholding the sanctity of education since 1949

Sophia High School is a Catholic institution, which was established in 1949 by Mother Andersson. It follows the motto “truth and universal love” and aims at providing premier English education to its students. Since its establishment, it has done a wonderful job in fulfilling the founder’s vision and mission. This is possibly why, even after decades, it remains one of the best ICSE schools in Bangalore today.

Every child at Sophia is recognized as a unique individual who has the right & freedom to learn and evolve academically. Along with excellence in academics, the school also works with students to help them develop personal integrity and independence. This promotes multiple qualities including compassion, wisdom, and competence.

In this article, we are going to discuss the infrastructure, curriculum, and other aspects that make the school stand out.

Location

Sophia’s location is quite picturesque. It is perched in Palace Road, Bangalore, with a golf course on one side and the Vidhana Soudha on the other. It is very easy to navigate to the school because it is surrounded by popular landmarks.

Curriculum

Sophia High School is an all-girls ICSE and ISC school offering classes up to grade 12.

Infrastructure

Does Sophia have age-old infrastructure and facilities since it is an old school? Not really! It has done a great job, evolving with time and the many changes in the educational system over the years. Let’s take a look:

Classrooms

Large classrooms and smartboards work as the pivot of academics at Sophia. There are 27 HCL-powered boards in total with built-in modules from various syllabi including ICSE, CBSE, and state. This ensures that education is wholesome as well as engaging.

Laboratories

Sophia has dedicated biology, chemistry, physics, computer, and psychology labs with all the required equipment. Practical learning plays a huge role in ICSE education and the school abides by the curriculum to offer children the best platform for experimentation.

Library

There are two libraries in Sophia, one for primary children and the other dedicated to secondary children. It also has a digital library known as the Galileo Digital Library, which it claims is the largest of its kind in the world. The library benefits both, teachers and students.

Auditorium

The school’s auditorium was built in 2008. It has a seating capacity of 1350, making it one of the largest in Bangalore. It hosts a great range of events and functions on special occasions.

Varsity

In 2013, Sophia switched to a web-based education management system named inVarsity. It is the one-stop for the management, faculty members, teachers, and students to stay updated about the school.

Physical education

Sophia follows a physical education program that ensures the participation of every child. The aim is to help children get physically fit and active. Basketball, throwball, athletics, swimming, yoga, and tennis are a few of the available options.

Co-curricular activities

Fine arts are the soul of the school. All students have the choice of many activities from dance to music, painting, debates, and much more.

Learning laboratory

We believe this is one of the standout features of Sophia. Not only does it treat every child equally without discrimination, but it also provides additional facilities to help kids with learning disabilities and difficulties. The learning laboratory is a dedicated space with extensive facilities.

Transport

Sophia has partnered with the BMTC to provides bus transportation to students and children. The buses ply in 13 different routes, covering all the major parts of the city.

Fee Structure

The average yearly fee for a Nursery is Rs. 1,12,000

Academics

Sophia prepares its children for ICSE and ISC examinations. The medium of instruction is English. Children may pick Kannada and/or Hindi as their second and/or third language(s). ISC is a two-year course after grade X. It is an equivalent of intermediate education.

The teaching methodology here is a blend of traditional and modern. The teachers do a good job of balancing them and doing what’s best for children. Excellence in education is stressed upon right from day 1 but the management takes strict measures to ensure that kids do not succumb to stress.

All in all, Sophia High School is a good ICSE school in Bangalore that provides quality education and excellent facilities to its students.
