The story of Avabai Petit is the story of how one woman's vision was transformed through her dedication & perseverance in the face of odds.The donor Bai Hamabai Framji Petit was desirous of perpetuating the name and the memory of her late mother Bai Avabai Framji Petit and of establishing an orphanage for Parsee girls. In order to take a step ahead in executing her charitable intention she had willingly agreed to donate ornaments and jewellery for establishing and maintaining such an institution. It was in furtherance to her charitable intentions that she had formed a trust and directed the trustees to purchase a suitable site in Bombay or its immediate vicinity for constructing buildings for the Parsee Girls' orphanage with all the necessary conveniences and facilities.OverviewAvabai Petit was founded in 1913 as a Boarding school for Parsee girls upto the Primary level .The school began with 40 pupils. It has since then been administered by a Board of Trustees. In 1963 the Board decided to accept day scholars from all communities. The school has gradually developed over the years until it has evolved into a full fledged Secondary School. The school is a recognized private unaided minority institution.The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, which has its office in New Delhi. It prepares students for the ICSE (Class X) examinations. The first batch of Class X had appeared for the ICSE examination in 2012.School StructureIn the heart of the city lies our school campus that houses large and airy classrooms and residential quarters for the Boarding section. The Boarding section is restricted to the Parsee children. The school has 14 classes, commencing with the Playschool upto the 10th class. The classes are spread across 7 acres of lush green land.The school endeavours to keep the number of students per class to a minimum, balancing efficiency and quality, with economy.The present strength of the school is approximately 1120 students and teaching staff.Fostering the House SpiritTo foster character, creativity, team spirit and healthy competition among the pupils, the whole school is divided into four houses namely Ava, Orbit, Petit and Spark. The children are assigned to one of the houses from Class I onwards. They wear different coloured house T-shirts on P.Ed days and their house colour ties on regular days. There are Inter-house competitions in arts, sports, debate, etc held in the school on a regular basis. This develops a team spirit and motivates children to work for a common goal of making their house excel. Each house is given points based on their performance.Games and SportsThe school has extensive sports fields. Basketball, Hockey, Throwball, Athletics, Table Tennis and Badminton are some of the games available.
