Education and its power to drive a generation is undoubtedly the most formidable of all pillars that our society is built on.
Standing tall in Mumbai’s Fort area, The Cathedral and John Connon School completes a century and a half of excellence in education in the country. Known to mould traditional values into a contemporary, real-world context, the institution prepares students to embark on a journey of academic as well as personal excellence. The Cathedral and John Connon School was founded by the Anglo- Scottish Education Society in Mumbai, in 1860. It began as a humble establishment when Bishop Harding and the Cathedral Chaplain decided to start a small Grammar school for boys and one for girls.
In 1881 a beautiful building was put up on the Esplanade and named after Mr John Connon, a well- known philanthropist and the Chief Registrar of Bombay. Today the school has five sections: the Pre-Primary, Infant, Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. For the last one hundred and fifty years, the school has imparted the finest education to its students. It follows the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) up to the tenth grade and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) for the eleventh and twelfth grades. The standards set by the institution are high and marks have to be earned through sustained hard work. The needs of students with learning difficulties are catered to by the Learning Resource Centre.
The student body of 1,960 boys and girls is divided into four Houses named after the founding fathers there is a fierce sense of “School first, house next, self last" as expressed through our school song. Cultural activities and games are an essential part of the curriculum. Inter – House and Inter – School cultural activities such as debates, dramatics and elocution and team games like soccer, rugby, cricket and basketball, and individual games like squash, tennis and badminton take their place alongside gymnastics, athletics and swimming and they promote a sense of loyalty and healthy competition. In addition to the curriculum, the school encourages self – reliance, love for the outdoors, a spirit of adventure, growth of intellectual curiosity and community service through various after- school programmes and clubs such as The Cathedral Model United Nations, The International Award for Young People, The Nature Club, Symposium, The Interact Club and the long standing tradition of the School Choir. An emphasis on the development of an all – round personality ensures that the students emerge informed, articulate and confident and are able to hold their own in any forum. In the annual School Music Festival, children are allowed to experiment with a wide range of genres, from choral singing to Rock music.
The school offers the Advanced Placement Programme for the College Board in the U.S.A, for students who wish to pursue further education abroad. Each year the school participates in a number of international programmes such as the Science Summer School at the University of Melbourne, The Harvard Model United Nations, The Sunburst Youth Camp at Singapore , The Reach Cambridge Programme, The Duke Talent Identification Programme, The International Gateway for Gifted Youth, The London International Science Youth Programme and many others. These experiences help the students to understand and appreciate cultural differences and make them productive citizens of the world. The school has large libraries and state-of-the-art Computer Laboratories and boasts of separate laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology. Cathedral is a member of the Head masters’ and Head mistresses’ Conference in the United Kingdom.
The school also boasts of illustrious alumni which include captains of industry, scientists, social activists, doctors, lawyers, actors and writers; each one is a beneficiary of the education provided by the institution. The school has proved, over 150 years, that motivation through academics and extracurricular activities creates confident, compassionate and intelligent global citizens of tomorrow.

I went to this school in 1970 and 1971 I am Austalian and was discrimated racially and abused badly by the teachers. I was called all sorts of names by the teachers and made to cut my hair every 2 weeks which wasn't even long but was blonde which was very disturbing. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.. Only teachers that liked me were the sport teachers as I was very good at most sports and that suited them as it made them look good. I was marked down by teachers in every thing that I submitted in most classes due to the discrimination. . Absolutely disgusting. . People could not believe marks I was given for these submissions. Awful time I will never forget

My daughter is a pass out from Cathedral and now I have the courage to spill the beans. There is absolutely no communication or transparency between the teachers, students and the parents. All rules and details are not shared and emails are also vague. Teachers don’t bother to answer the emails and if some discussions happen verbally , they easily go back on their word citing misunderstanding. We had paid extra for the school counsellor and CAS activities but both expenses are unaccounted for. The counsellor most of the time never showed up for the scheduled meeting , did not share the details like predictive scores which other schools do, or the past data of the schools which ex students have gone to etc. Even for CAS activities the kids were left on their own to fend and were not reimbursed the expenses. A lot of unnecessary pressure is put on the kids to perform and kids are forced to take private tuitions. They are known for their strict marking and lowering the confidence of the child. IB Parent

As an alumna of this school who only recently graduated I can tell you that this school is living on its past glory and is no longer what it was. No wonder it's slipped from 1st to 10th or something. The principal and administration are priggish, orthodox and narrow-minded, focusing only on the benefit of the PTA and the students whose parents pay crazy sums of money to the school as 'charity' but it's really just to get some prefect or some position in their final year. You'd be better off at another school at the same fees because atleast those schools make it worth the money. Those who flourish here are the ones who end up marrying another alumni, becoming a PTA member and repeating the process for their own children. Cathedralites live in their own little world and imagine high school is their kingdom, maybe it is, but what they don't realise is there's a world to face after, one that Cathedral shields you from rather than preparing you for.

WORST & PATHETIC School Staff. I would suggest the school is rainbow from outside but a nightmare from inside. Management lacks in keeping up with adequate behaviour with the parents, it should treat with esteem. Eventually, it has been one of the worst experience in conversing with Miss Asha from Lower I Class works at this so called renowned school that has just been for decades but couldn't follow a decent management cycle. Parents, This school is not suggested!

the school is great no doubt but some of the staff is very arrogant and disrespectful towards parents. I had called to inquire about Lower I Class and some lady namely Miss Asha was so disrespectful and uninterested in entertaining the parents. "If your Garden has a gutter at its entrance, no sane person will enter it even if you have exotic flowers".. The Administration should put a polite person for Lower I Class which is the beginning of our child's educational journey.. As of now The cathedral has lost one pupil..

“Prima in Indis. ...Door of the East, with its face to the West.” Alumni list reads like the “who’s who” of Indian society. An academic hot house, but all said and done it was a privilege to have spent my 12 formative years at this venerable institution! May it continue to thrive/ prosper!
