In this blog, we shall enunciate the highly anticipated successful curriculum of Trio WOrld Academy which too has contributed to happiness at Trio.

Transdisciplinary Approach

Traditionally, we see schools as a day of individual subjects where a teacher passes knowledge to their learners. Each subject is taught in its own right, perhaps by different teachers. Transdisciplinary learning is different in this case. Learning is not separated into a rigid structure. Instead, new knowledge is understood with visible connections across subjects. In a school like Trio World Academy, learning is recognized as a multi-faceted process where knowledge memorization is not the sole purpose. Instead, the development of skills such as thinking skills, research skills, self-management, social skills, and communication skills are developed in every learner. The intention is that these skills can be developed across all learning and strengthened over time. Without a balance of these skills, the utility of one’s knowledge is not maximized.

The PYP model was designed with the needs of a changing world in mind. How do w e prepare children for a world where answers can be given at the click of a button? This is addressed through the inquiry themes. Essentially, these are wide-ranging topics of research which can be related to subject matter. They must be deemed meaningful, relevant, and constructive. Here’s an example of how this may look in practice. In the theme of “Sharing the Planet,” learners can engage with scientific knowledge whilst also providing relevant examples of global issues and teaching personal and social responsibility. Teachers design opportunities with learners to develop their skills in many different disciplines. For example, a reading lesson to research sea pollution, a science investigation to identify a food chain, or writing tasks to take action with their new knowledge.

In short, this means that it’s very rare to walk into a PYP classroom and see children completing exercises from a textbook. However, the subject knowledge is still thoroughly covered through inquiry skills. The knowledge is covered in a broad and interconnected way in the PYP. The engagement with learning should be an open, explorative process which crosses subject boundaries.

All the things that we have discussed above are achieved through six transdisciplinary themes. These themes act as the compass for the curriculum, making sure students’ education is not fragmented but holistic, mirroring the complexity and interconnectedness of the world they live in.

1. Who We Are– This transdisciplinary theme encourages students to investigate the core of who they are, examining the concept of being human. It motivates individuals to explore personal, social, and cultural identities, promoting self-awareness and empathy. Viewed in this way, learning transforms into an exploration of oneself and empathy for others, with disciplines such as social studies, language, and health education overlapping.

2. Where We Are in Place and Time– Within this theme, students explore their position in the world, considering both geographic and historical perspectives. They investigate how societies and individuals are influenced by geography, history, and the passage of time. This theme effortlessly combines historical, geographical, and mathematical elements, allowing students to delve into ideas surrounding time, transformation, and consistency.

3. How We Express Ourselves– Creativity and communication are the main focus in this aspect. This unit delves into the numerous methods humans use to communicate thoughts, feelings, and concepts. Students develop their ability to communicate and appreciate various cultural expressions through art, language, drama, and music.

4. How the World Works– This theme acts as a doorway to comprehend the natural world and the scientific laws that control it. Students explore the workings of the cosmos, nature, and human creativity. Students will investigate natural phenomena, technology’s impact, and ethical dilemmas from scientific advancements, where science, math, and social studies intersect.

5. How We Organize Ourselves– This theme sheds light on the organization and systems of society. It motivates students to investigate the ways in which humans have created. This question creates awareness into human-made systems such as the government. Now they can learn all kinds of civics topics like forms of government, be it autocracy or democracy. Then other systems are economics, and various institutions such as the judiciary etc.

6. Sharing the Planet– Here, the students are made to feel a sense of belongingness while studying subjects like Social issues (global warming, climate change etc). The subjects which can be taught through this are Social Science, Science and Ethics. They all merge to form this consciousness of being in unity with the whole creation.

After learning the modus operandi of Transdisciplinary Integration, we can now take a stroll on how it shapes individuals. It helps students in a holistic way by these-

  • Cognitive Development– Students can enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills by interacting with ideas from various fields. Instead of looking at issues from only one perspective, they discover how to tackle obstacles from different viewpoints, delving into details and combining information in significant ways. This multidimensional thinking is essential for promoting mental flexibility, allowing students to link concepts and gain understanding that may go unnoticed in a more segmented educational setting.
  • Social and Emotional Development– The cooperative nature of transdisciplinary learning greatly contributes to the development of social and emotional intelligence in individuals. Students are motivated to collaborate, share thoughts, and work together on projects that need teamwork. This process helps develop empathy by teaching individuals to respect different viewpoints and recognize the importance of working together. Students improve their communication skills by expressing their ideas and actively listening to others, which sets the groundwork for building robust interpersonal connections.
  • Cultural Awareness– Understanding different cultures is crucial in a globalized world where cultural distinctions are becoming less defined. By delving into universal topics, students develop understanding of various cultures and viewpoints. This familiarity assists in broadening their perspective, fostering respect for various lifestyles. Exploring global issues helps them understand their place in a larger human community, nurturing a vital sense of global citizenship in today’s interconnected world.
  • Self-Management and Reflection– The PYP’s focus on inquiry empowers students to assume responsibility for their educational path. This process includes establishing personal objectives, closely tracking advancement, and pondering on experiences to acquire profound understanding. This self-guided method boosts confidence and creates a feeling of accountability, as students gain the ability to steer their own educational journeys. Reflecting on their strengths and areas for growth through self-examination facilitates ongoing personal growth.
  • Creativity and Innovation– Creativity and innovation thrive through the integration of different disciplines in transdisciplinary settings. Encouraging students to think creatively and apply their knowledge in new ways by breaking traditional subject boundaries. Exploring ideas from various fields not only ignites creativity but also results in the creation of innovative solutions to intricate issues. Students are given the ability to try out new ideas, take intellectual risks, and tackle challenges with a creative approach, allowing them to generate innovative ideas in their chosen field.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the transdisciplinary approach at Trio World Academy in the PYP programme is a game changer in the field of academics. The inquiry-based structure of the PYP encourages self-management and reflection, empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey. This self-directed approach builds confidence, responsibility, and a lifelong love of learning. Creativity and innovation flourish as students explore ideas across disciplines, leading to the development of original solutions to the world’s complex challenges.
In essence, transdisciplinary integration within the PYP is not just an educational strategy; it is a philosophy that prepares students for the complexities of life beyond the classroom. By weaving together knowledge, skills, and attitudes across various disciplines, the PYP equips students with the intellectual agility, social competence, and cultural awareness needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. This holistic approach ensures that PYP students are not only academically competent but also well-rounded, socially responsible, and emotionally intelligent individuals, ready to make a positive impact on the global stage.
